Postage increases again

The price of the first-class stamp will go to 45 cents starting on January 22nd, 2012. The cost to mail a postcard will go up three cents to 32 cents, letters to Canada or Mexico will increase five cents to 85 cents, and letters to other international locations will increase seven cents to 1.05 USDs.  Postage also goes up for Priority Mail and most other services.  For further details, take a peek here http://about.usps.com/news/national-releases/2011/pr11_128.htm.

Good, hopefully people will be able to keep their jobs because of this. I don’t understand how the USPS can let things get to the point they have without doing this beforehand. Even is a stamp cost $.75, it would still be insanely cheap to send a letter.

Now, unfortunately this merely band-aids a bigger problem. They will have to figure out how to remain relevant in today’s digital world. We will probably need mailing services for many years, but email replaces many of the written communications of yesteryear.

I am glad to hear someone actually support the USPS…Most people bash their heads in every chance they get. It is a business that will certainly have to go through some changes to remain competitive and even relevant over the next few years. I’m still amazed by the amount of amateurs worldwide that prefer paper QSLs – myself being one of those!

I do support them. They provide a vital service at a price we should feel guilty for. It costs 2-3 times to send a letter via UPS or Fed Ex 2 day service vs Priority Mail. Frankly, the people in charge should be removed for the negligence to change their prices to keep up with economic pressures. People don’t have to lose their jobs, at least not in the quantity they are proposing. I am all for some restructuring and trimming of the fat. Like most companies, USPS has grown too big and there is a lot of waste.

Nobody likes higher prices, but when you compare it with other everyday things, like gas, they have really dropped the ball. Gas prices went through the roof. There was no rioting in the streets. We did what we had to do. We spend less on luxuries to make up for it because we have to drive to work. Now, it screws up the luxury retailers, but generally, people don’t spend less money. They just shift their spending based on what they need. Too bad that the people making luxury products didn’t see the writing on the wall and change their business to oil refineries. Welcome to the Free Market and Capitalism 101.

And speaking of luxuries, Apple’s latest iPhone has broken all previous sales records in a shorter time. So, how can this economy be as bad as the media would like you to believe. Go to the mall this Saturday night and tell me we’re in a depression. I don’t buy it. Are things worse then they were 10 years ago, sure. But I just don’t see the doom and gloom that is coming out of the TV speakers. Maybe I am naive and when I do see it, it will be too late. If so, I’ll just skip the next generation iPhone.

      Enough with my ranting.
