Roto-rooting

Ok, so I decided to try and tear apart this CD44 rotor that was so graciously given to me. Rotors are expensive. I’ll buy you another beer the next time I see ya! (and work on the crank up radio from my Dad’s attic!)

I started with removal of the lower mast mounting portion of the rotor. It was held in place by for medium-duty screws. Then removed the lower ball bearing race. Again, held in place by 4 smaller medium-duty screws. Here’s what it looked like.

Once apart, I found that one of the ball bearings was (and still is) missing!

I am using this as a template for this whole rebuiding the rotor project, as I have NO experience in doing so:

Rebuilding The Alliance HD73

I don’t think I’ll go to the extent of painting the exterior of the rotor, as the author did. I simply want to ensure it’s mechanical ability and a long life on top of the tower.

So far it’s still apart in the garage.

I am going to lube the races with lithium grease tonight. I would also like to obtain more information on ensuring the braking system is operational and lining up the rotor to it’s proper direction once it’s on the tower and beam is in place. I am going to go without the bearing unless I figure out how to obtain one the EXACT same size. Then again, I might try and hunt one down…..

I’m assuming you situate the rotor in a N (or any direction for that matter, as long as you know where it is situated, and then spin the beam in the mast until it is N, then tighten down all the bolts.

If anyone is out there with some experience on the above issues, leave some comments!

Thanks and 73!
